The IAPS issued this press release to announce the exhibition:
On exhibition May 10, 2014 – June 21, 2014
The International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) is pleased to announce its 24th Juried Exhibition to be held from May 10 – June 21, 2014 at the venerable Vose Galleries of Boston. This IAPS exhibition will feature soft pastel paintings by 76 contemporary artists, selected from over 850 entries. Hailing from twenty-nine states, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, and Queensland Australia, the finalists are some of the most prolific and important contemporary pastel artists in the world. The show will display how this luminous medium is inspiring artists and advancing the quality, prestige and value of pastel painting.
In a tandem exhibition, Vose Galleries will show pastels that highlight the historical context of the medium. “We find that art enthusiasts commonly consider pastel paintings as sketches, rather than finished paintings,” states Marcia Vose, Vice-President of Vose Galleries. “This exhibition will astound viewers with the effects that pastel can render, establishing its validity as a separate, serious medium.”
IAPS, founded in 1994 by pastel artist Urania Christy Tarbet of California, is the umbrella organization that represents over 70 pastel societies united in a common cause—to demonstrate the validity and quality of fine art in soft pastel around the world. Liz Haywood-Sullivan, the current President of IAPS, is a local artist residing in Marshfield Hills, MA and has been represented by Vose Galleries since 2007. Two annual juried exhibitions are sponsored by IAPS, one a web exhibition and the other hosted by a gallery. The upcoming exhibition at Vose Galleries will be the first time an IAPS juried exhibition will be held in New England.
The exhibition will be viewable on all five floors of Vose Galleries’ Newbury Street brownstone, and online at www.vosegalleries.com. An exhibition catalogue will be available for $15 p.p. Please call or e-mail the gallery for ordering information.
